For this project I chose to do "The Book Illustration competition" partnered with House of Illustration and The Folio Society to create three illustrations and a binding for 'The Selected Adventures and Memoirs of sherlock Holmes' By Sir Arthur Conan Doyal. The three books are "A Scandal in Bohemia", "The Man with The Twisted Lip" and "The Musgrave Ritual".

THE SCANDAL IN BOHEMIA This short story is part of "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" by Sir Arthur Conon Doyal published in The Strand Magazine in 1891. This story is told by Dr. John Watson; who has moved out of 221B Baker Street after his marriage. He is visiting Sherlock on the same day Holmes is hired by a mysteriously dressed man. The man is King Wilhelm of Bohemia who implores Holmes to find some compromising photos that Wilhelm's former lover, Irene Adler, has threatened to distribute in order to prevent Wilhelm's wedding. Holmes and Watson work together to locate the photos but when they go to retrieve them, he learns that Adler has already moved the photos. But during the investigation Holmes witnesses the wedding of Adler and her lover, because of this he has no need to ruin Wilhelm's wedding beach she is in love too. In the end Irene Adler shall be known as The Woman, for intelligence and her for being the only woman to out smart Sherlock Holmes. [Facts from Guides and Bohemia, 2017]

THE MAN WITH THE TWISTED LIP

This story is another short part of "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" The book starts with Dr. Watson and his wife receiving a late call from Watson's wife's dear, but distraught, friend who asks for his help in retrieving her husband [a drug addict] from a drug den he was known to visit. On his hunt to track down the husband he stumbles across his dear friend, Sherlock Holmes; who was on a case assigned by Nellie St. Clair who was distraught over the disappearance of her husband Neville- who was also last seen int he second story window at that same drug den. Watson retails how when Holmes and the police end to investigate the top room window [where Mrs. St. Clair said she saw her husband being pulled away from the window] and instead of finding him they find all his clothes and filthy beggar with a twisted lip scar. Initially Holmes suspects foul play as Mr. St. Clair's coat-weighted down by coins- was found on the riverbank. After interrogating the beggar Holmes determines that the beggar is Neville St. Clair in disguise. [Facts from IMDb, 2017]

THE MISGAVE RITUAL

This is a short story part of the "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes" The story is a retell of a old case Holmes had to solve before he met Watson. Watson inquiries about a box Holmes pulls out when told organise his papers. " A crumpled piece of paper, an old fashioned brass key, a peg of wood with a ball of string attached to it, and three rusty old discs of metal." Holmes tells Watson how his old college acquaintance, Reginald Musgrave, came to him with a case:his butler, Brunton, disappeared after being caught looking through the Musgrave family papers. Reginald told Holmes about how after being caught Reginald gave his butler a week to leave the job. However he disappeared a few days before the week was up. The Musgrave Ritual is a old poem/instruction that the men of the Musgrave family have to do:

"Whose was it?" "His who is gone/" "Who shall have it?" "He Who Will Come." "Where was the sun?" "Over the oak" "Where was the shadow?" "Under the elm/" "How was it stepped?" "North by ten and by ten, east by five and by five, south by two and by two, west by one and by one, and so under." "What shall we give for it?" "All that is ours." "Why should we give it?" "For the sake of the trust"

Holmes deciphers the destination and finds Brunton'd dead body inside a cellar. [Liu, 2017]
