Deciding on Jobs

For the whole week Nick, Marisa and I were over worked as curators. For the day I could help (because I work) on Sunday we still had to paint a few walls in the main room. Corina, Charis, Marisa and I cleared the tables from the walls and then began taking Blue tack and other objects from the walls. We cleared the room of work that people didn’t take down (even though we told the on Thursday to put in their draws) and work had to be taken of the tables ( we told them to do this too).

We painted the walls until 6pm while Charis, Corina and Marisa put away tables as well. We had to clear the floors because of dirt and fallen paint, so I mopped the half an Charis mopped the other half.

During the week end we asked students to bring in work and put them, with their names on the main table so we could put them up when we came back on Monday. Many students were… unresponsive to these instructions so we added a bit of incentive; their work will not have a place in the exhibition if they did not bring it by the end of Monday. This made many people bring in their work.

I do not feel even slightly bad about this because they can’t expect us to put up work when there couldn’t be space for work and when others were bothered enough to bring theirs when asked.

We began by planning how the work- of the people helping firstly-would go, we decided to place the work in groups: the people who made zines together and were going to show the zines would be placed in the same area. Charis, Marisa and I initially was going to be next to each other with our zine on the opposite wall, however Marisa wanted to be on the wall with the zine. Charis and my work were then placed together with Marisa near the zine and her book work.

We placed all the work that we had on the walls with blue tack then made sure they were straight, and then I hammered them in.

At the end of the week were tired, annoyed and just wanted this to be done really. I feel this would have gone better people came into help put the work up (only a handful came in) and if people didn’t act all high and uppity when their work “wasn’t in the place I wanted it” well bloody tuff! If they had come in to put it up or given us an idea on ow they wanted it up instead of going “ oh I wanted it like this” then the week would have gone a lot smoother.
